Anna Gregor

Painter working in Brooklyn, NY

Statement

Painting embodies the problem of being human, of being both an animal body and a mind that can imagine freedom from the body’s limitations. The potential distance, violence, and harmony between body and mind, and between the bodies and minds of others, lay at the heart of my work. How do we dissolve the boundaries––physical and ideal––within and between us? Each act of making begins with this question and each work of art is an attempt at an answer. As I work, playing with the material and ideal potentials of paint, I bring my own material and ideal aspects, my body and my mind, into harmony with each other: for a moment they do not feel opposed. And when I as a viewer attempt to understand an artwork as a physical manifestation of another’s ideal world, I––if only for a moment––dissolve the boundaries between us, approaching harmony. By way of individual revelation, painting is essentially social in its function: anyone who strives to express themselves honestly and to understand sympathetically collapses the distance between artist and viewer, listener and speaker, body and mind, body and other body.
